Health promotion in schools has developed from being an initiative supported by the Health Promoting Schools Unit towards being a core aspect of school and cluster improvement planning.
The importance of health and wellbeing in schools is now widely recognised as an integral part of Curriculum for Excellence, which emphasises the responsibility of all teachers and practitioners in supporting the development of health and wellbeing in children and young people. It is also reflected in a number of recent publications such as 'The Journey to Excellence' (HMIE, 2006) and 'How good is our school? (Part 3)' (HMIE, 2007) and further endorsed by the introduction of the Schools (Health Promotion and Nutrition) (Scotland) Act 2007.
Given this increased profile of health promotion in educational policy, the Scottish Government has taken the decision to mainstream the activities of the Scottish Health Promoting Schools Unit by establishing a new Health and Wellbeing team within Learning and Teaching Scotland.
This team will continue to work with national and regional partners to extend the work of the Unit with a particular focus on supporting the health and wellbeing aspects of Curriculum for Excellence and the implementation of the Act
