The Scottish Health Promoting Schools Unit is a partnership between the Scottish Executive Education and Health Departments, Learning and Teaching Scotland, NHS Health Scotland and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities.

The Scottish Executive

The Scottish Executive is the devolved government for Scotland. It is responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Scotland, including health, education, justice, rural affairs and transport.

The Executive was established in 1999, following the first elections to the Scottish Parliament. It is a coalition between the Scottish Labour Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrat Party.

The Executive is led by a First Minister who is nominated by the Parliament and in turn appoints the other Scottish Ministers who make up the Cabinet.

Executive civil servants are accountable to Scottish Ministers, who are themselves accountable to the Scottish Parliament.

Learning and Teaching Scotland

Learning and Teaching Scotland is an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Scottish Executive Education Department. The organisation's role is to advise the Scottish Executive and to support development in learning and education, including the use of information and communications technology (ICT).

Learning and Teaching Scotland operates as part of the Scottish educational and learning community and in relation to the wider political, social, economic and cultural context. Key partnerships within Scotland include local authorities, schools and other educational establishments, HM Inspectors of Education and other national organisations, such as the Scottish Qualifications Authority and Careers Scotland, together with professional associations and business organisations.

NHS Health Scotland

Health Scotland is a new special health board created on 1 April 2003 by bringing together the Public Health Institute of Scotland (PHIS), and the Health Education Board for Scotland (HEBS).

It provides a national focus for improving health and will work with the Scottish Executive and other key partners to take action to improve health and reduce inequalities in Scotland.

Convention of Scottish Local Authorities

The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) is the representative voice of Scottish local government. It also acts as the employers' association on behalf of all Scottish councils, negotiating salaries, wages and conditions of service for local government employees with the relevant trade unions.
