Health Promoting Schools

In a health promoting school everyone should try to have more physical activity in their lives. One way of doing this is to walk or cycle to school instead of getting a lift in a car.

Travelling to school by car can cause:

  • traffic jams
  • unsafe roads
  • a danger of accidents
  • pollution in the air.

Your school can help tackle these problems by taking part in the safe routes to school programme.

Safe routes to school means:

  • encouraging pupils to walk or cycle to school
  • making children more alert when they arrive at school
  • improving road safety and reducing accidents
  • improving the health of children and parents
  • reducing traffic jams and pollution.
