All 32 council and NHS board partnerships have now had their local approach to health promoting schools nationally accredited. Their local accreditation arrangements meet the criteria outlined in the national accreditation framework, have values and aims consistent with PDF file iconPDF file: Being Well – Doing Well (1033KB) and have been developed with regard to the council’s ongoing quality assurance procedures.

PDF file iconPDF file: A Framework for the National Accreditation of Health Promoting Schools in Scotland (Scottish Executive/Scottish Health Promoting Schools Unit, 2006) (113KB) was produced in order to support consistent and coherent approaches to health promoting school development throughout Scotland and to identify progress towards the Ministerial aspiration that all schools are health promoting by December 2007 and of developing sustainable approaches to health promoting schools in the longer term.

National accreditation operated on the principle of national endorsement of local accreditation processes. To receive national endorsement the local approach had to be consistent with the nationally agreed criteria as identified in the framework.

As a result of these local approaches and the programmes of support in place to take these forward, the majority of schools throughout the country are making really good progress and are committed to developing the health and well-being of the school population.

In addition, national accreditation of health promoting schools has provided an opportunity for SHPSU and its strategic partners to consolidate a detailed understanding of the progress made in respect of health promoting schools within each council area.

The Scottish Health Promoting Schools Unit has produced a report on behalf of the National Endorsement Team which provides a summary of the national accreditation process.
