There are many different policies and initiatives that have an impact on health promoting schools and in the National guidance section we aim to introduce the most important of these.

Background helps to place current health promoting school development in context and looks at important documents and decisions over the past 20 years that have helped take the agenda forward. International developments looks back over the same period to highlight some of the work taking place in other countries. A Historical perspective of international health promoting schools development is also provided by Ian Young of NHS Health Scotland.

Health promoting school models draws from around the world to share practice of the health promoting school. The World Health Organization and European Network of Health Promoting Schools definitions and examples from England, Wales, South Australia and Scotland feature.

The Key initiatives section focuses on some of the most important policies and initiatives in Scotland at the moment. Research provides a useful introduction to the evidence base for health promoting school work.
