The emotional and social needs of staff are an important part of whole school approaches to improving emotional well-being. There is good evidence that school staff cannot communicate and develop emotional well-being effectively if their own needs for emotional well-being are not being met.

It is important, therefore, that schools include a focus on school staff emotional and social needs of their staff as part of the overall well-being programme.

Continuing professional development

In addition, the knowledge, understanding and skills that will support school staff in the development and maintenance of emotional well-being in schools need to be developed through training and continuing professional development.

Schools may find that accessing, extending and developing collaborative and multi-agency approaches to training and development is beneficial.
